CBD Oil Drug Test

You may or may not be drug tested at your place of employment, or perhaps as a matter of gaining employment somewhere. Whether it is a policy that you agree with or not, the fact is that it is a reality for many people across all industries. If you’re a federal employee, you will absolutely be drug tested. It is not a requirement in the private sector, though it is becoming more common for employers in that space to implement these measures for employees.

If you’re visiting this page, then the chances are you are a user of CBD oil and are facing a possible drug test. Will it show up as a positive result for marijuana, or are you in the clear? Read on for all you need to know about this topic.

Can You Fail a Drug Test Because of CBD Use?

Will cbd oil fail a drug test
The answer, in almost all cases, is no. It will not cause you to test positive on a test for marijuana.

THC is known as what is responsible for the psychoactivity of marijuana and the euphoric feeling it brings. When doing a drug screen for marijuana, they perform an immunoassay with antibodies that are made to detect THC and its main metabolite. The standard test has a cutoff level of 50 ng/mL for it to be a positive screen.

When a test is higher than this threshold, a second test is performed to confirm the results. In this second test, called a GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry), there is a cutoff level of 15 ng/mL. This test is specific to only the 11-nor-THCCOOH metabolite.

That’s a lot of science there, so we’ll break it down into simpler terms. Here is where CBD users are fortunate in regards to drug screens. The urine screen is known to have little to no cross-reactivity to non-psychoactive cannibinoids such as CBD. Thus, normal users of CBD will not yield a positive result for marijuana.

There are very rare exceptions, however (this is why we said “in almost all cases” earlier), in users who consume an irregularly high amount of CBD, for instance more than 1000-2000 mg of hemp oil per day. This is a very large amount that you probably won’t come anywhere near. In cases like these, it can result in a “false positive” result. When this happens, the second test (GC/MS) would provide a negative result and clear the user.

On thing to keep in mind is that most of the CBD-rich hemp oil that is on the market has much less THC in it than marijuana (as low as 1/300th the amount when compared to marijuana). This is why it would take such an abnormally high amount of consumption to even make a “false positive” a consideration.

Pure CBD oil used medicinally would not lead to a positive drug test.

CBD Past Drug Test

We hope that we didn’t lose you in all of the scientific reasoning above, but the answer to the question is – no, using CBD will not cause you to fail a drug test. Go ahead and use your CBD oil to your desire, you’re in the clear!
